Some of these activities are educational enough to include in your Christmas homeschool program.
Homeschool Christmas Countdown
Idea #1 – Countdown Chain
The Christmas countdown chain is a creative and festive activity that builds excitement leading up to Christmas. The idea is to make a paper garland with a link for each day of the countdown, starting from December 1st, which means 25 links for December. Each day, a child can tear off one link, and as the chain gets shorter, the anticipation for Christmas grows. You can personalize the links with small surprises, activities, or even messages of kindness to make the countdown even more special.
This simple craft not only helps kids track the days but also encourages creativity, patience, and a sense of tradition during the holiday season.
Many families create simple paper chains for a fun countdown to Christmas, using basic strips of paper. However, I enjoy adding a bit of flair to this tradition. One year, we made each chain link a fun Christmas activity, so every day we tore off a link, we got to enjoy a new holiday activity together. It made the countdown even more special and memorable!
This year, we’re planning to create a Names of Jesus countdown chain, with each link highlighting one of the many names of Jesus found in the Bible. I’ve heard of other families doing a Christmas countdown where each link features a scripture telling the story of Christmas, one day at a time. That sounds like a fun idea, so we might try it next year—unless we decide to create two chains this year!
There are countless creative ideas for Christmas countdown chains that you can enjoy with your family. I’ve listed a few, but feel free to come up with your own unique ideas or keep it simple with blank links—because sometimes, that’s fun too!
Daily Christmas Activities to Enrich Your December Unit Studies
Plan a simple activity for each day leading up to Christmas, such as decorating cookies, singing carols, or having a holiday movie night.
Names of Jesus
Create a chain where each link features one of Jesus’ many names from the Bible, like “Prince of Peace,” “Emmanuel,” “King of Kings,” etc.
Christmas Story Scriptures
Include a scripture on each chain link that tells a part of the Christmas story, allowing your family to reflect on the true meaning of Christmas as you countdown the days.
Acts of Service
Each day, perform a small act of kindness, like sending a card to a friend or helping a neighbor. You can include ideas on each link that encourage giving back during the holiday season.
Christmas Books
Choose a Christmas book to read each day. This could include beloved classics, religious stories, or fun holiday tales that bring joy and a sense of togetherness.
Daily Christmas Crafts
Get crafty by incorporating a small craft project into each day’s link, like making ornaments, holiday cards, or simple decorations.
